The Indian Women's Association (I.W.A.), Salem, is proud to be approaching its centennial milestone. Since its inception, it has been a beacon of hope and empowerment for women. The organization has successfully established hostels for working women, nursery schools for underprivileged children, and a home for the elderly, contributing immensely to the upliftment of society.

Founded on June 1, 1930, by Smt. N. Kamakshi Ammal, with the encouragement of Mrs. Margaret Cousins, I.W.A. began by offering tailoring, English, and Hindi language classes for women in need. Over the years, it has expanded its reach and impact.

Milestones in Our Journey

• 1950 – Dance classes were introduced under the leadership of Smt. Seethalakshmi Ammal, for girls.
• 1955 – The E.S.L.C. students’ hostel was established. On August 7, 1955, the Silver Jubilee was celebrated, with District Judge Thiru. Ganapathiya Pillai and Chief Minister Thiru. K. Kamaraj attending the event and appreciating the services of I.W.A.
• 1960 – On July 24, 1960, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Vice President of India, laid the foundation stone for the Working Women’s Hostel, marking a significant step in I.W.A.'s commitment to women's empowerment.
• 1961 – The hostel was inaugurated by Chief Minister Thiru K. Kamaraj.
• With the effortless service of Thirumathi Seethalakshmi Ramasamy, fondly called "AMMA," the Indian Women’s Association experienced tremendous growth from 1960 onward. This team expanded membership, increased participation at events, and activities. The All India Women’s Conference 1976 December celebrated their “GOLDEN JUBILEE” at Sarada College Salem in a grand manner with many celebrities as guests. “AMMA” was the convenor for the conference.
• 1980 – The Golden Jubilee was celebrated on December 14th and 15th, 1980, at Sri Sarada College Auditorium, with distinguished guests including Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker Thiru K. Rajaram, Health Minister Thiru. Hande, and Srimathi Sarojini Varadhappan, who honored the occasion with their presence.
• 1990 – The Diamond Jubilee was celebrated on July 8th and 9th, 1990, at Sri Sarada College Auditorium with eminent guests including Srimathi Lakshmi Menon, Central Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. M.S. Udaya Murthy, and writer Srimathi Sivasankari. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Yatheswari Ambika Priya Amba for graciously providing the venue. The first evening featured a Bharatanatyam performance by Mrs. Chitra Visveswaran, while the second evening showcased cultural programs by I.W.A. members.
• 1994 – On February 14, 1994, the Sri Sarada Senior Citizens’ Home was inaugurated at Lakshmipuram, Gandhi Road, Salem - 636007. Sri Ramakrishna Tapovanam, Tirupparaitturai Swamiji Nithyananda presided over the function, and Coimbatore Lakshmi Mills owner Thiru G.K. Sundaram inaugurated the building. Yatheswari Ambika Priya Amba and Yatheswari Vinayagapriya Amba participated in the event. 2000 - 70th Celebration.
• 2005 – On July 9th and 10th, 2005, the Platinum Jubilee of I.W.A. was celebrated at Deiveegam Kalyana Mandapam, Salem. The event was graced by Kiran Bedi, Director General of Police Research, as the Chief Guest. A large gathering of students and members made the event a grand success, with many cultural programs performed by members over the two days.

• 1960 – ஜூலை 24, 1960 அன்று, டாக்டர். எஸ். ராதாகிருஷ்ணன், இந்திய குடியரசுத் துணைத் தலைவர், பணிப்பெண்கள் விடுதிக்கான அடிக்கல் நாட்டினார், இது ஐ.டபிள்யூ.ஏ.யின் பெண்கள் அதிகாரமளித்தல் உறுதிப்பாட்டில் ஒரு முக்கிய படியாகும்.
• 1961 – விடுதி முதல்வர் திரு. கே. காமராஜ் அவர்களால் திறந்து வைக்கப்பட்டது.

• 1994 – பிப்ரவரி 14, 1994 அன்று, சேலம் - 636007, காந்தி சாலை, லட்சுமிபுரத்தில் ஸ்ரீ சரதா மூத்த குடிமக்கள் இல்லம் திறக்கப்பட்டது. திருப்பரைத்துறை ஸ்ரீ ராமகிருஷ்ண தபோவனத்தின் சுவாமிஜி நித்தியானந்தா தலைமை தாங்கினார், மற்றும் கோயம்புத்தூர் லட்சுமி மில்ஸ் உரிமையாளர் திரு. ஜி.கே. சுந்தரம் கட்டிடத்தைத் திறந்து வைத்தார். திருமதி. யதேஸ்வரி அம்பிகா பிரியா அம்பா மற்றும் திருமதி. யதேஸ்வரி விநாயகப்பிரியா அம்பா ஆகியோர் நிகழ்வில் கலந்து கொண்டனர். 2000 -70வது ஆண்டு விழா.
